Really strange that Japan of all places has to resort to crowdfunding to restore a national treasure. Wonder what's up?

I think when they first started remaking blades (I believe Mikazuki Munechika was the first project DMM launched themselves?) japan just let the fandom just take off from there. There have been a few other blade restorations outside of the ones listed in this article. Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, Souza Samonji And Tsurumaru Kuninaga have been remade as well. Probably some others but those are the first that come to mind.

I can't help but think that there is no country on earth with enough money to restore or preserve all of its historical treasures, even if they were to spend money on nothing else.

I think this is very cool. Lots of times you hear about crowdfunding enabling new media or something like that to get made, and that's great and all, but it's on a whole different level when the funding is going to something like this. This isn't just making a fun new episode or game project that most people will forget about soon thereafter, this is preserving real history for generations to come.
