It always felt like to me that Niantic was just sitting on that money and not using it to do much of anything except gradual content updates. Every sign at that point, and to a lesser extent today, points to Niantic as a company whose team was completely unpreparted for their explosive growth but continue to treat their player base as tiny (except where they're showing off). I hope I'm wrong just seeing it as an outsider, however.

I think so too. So much wasted potential.

Yeah, I remember hearing about how the number of employees at Niantic had gone up a lot, but it didn't seem like they were producing at a capacity comparable to other game companies of their size (in terms of staff size). It's as if their new hires were just there to perform maintenance, debugging, and monitoring for suspicious activity, except without any real direction on how to do it or what to look for. That is, they were showing growth in company size without showing any growth in production.

This is something depressingly common among small game companies that manage to find a steady source of revenue. Most of it is due to the leaders having no idea how to manage a bigger company or manage money (Farsight Studios, 3D Realms), though a few were definitely meant to be a means for the founders to get rich and live the life of luxury they dreamed of (Ion Storm, Heighway). I do hope Niantic is a case of the former, but I have a hunch there's some tinge of the latter considering most of the money made through Pokémon GO reported as profits just kind of become completely forgotten after that.

It's Niantic that got in trouble, not the players. Due to the problems at the first major event, Niantic must pay each attendee the price of transportation to the event.

It wasn't really their fault though. I played pogo all day in Boston along with hundreds of other and the game played fine. The cell network went belly up because every provider except sprint declined to beef up their networks the event
