Oh hell to the yes!
This is incredible news. I was already happy with the new season but this is icing on the cake. Season 1 with most likely new content! Season 1 was always the weakest season in my opinion, and had a lot of weak filler too. I hope these new movies will stay true to the source, I'm assuming Gatoh will write the scripts for all of them since he didn't in season 1. I also hope the animation is completely done from scratch. This show is dated as hell and does not look that good today. I think a Xebec movie budget ( if Xebec is indeed animating this) would be incredibly good looking. Ah, what an awesome announcement. Excited to see where the FMP franchise goes from here! |

I am not sure how it will go :/ Since original season 1 seem perfect for me. Well that is my opinion.

It will probably cut that "filler" arc where Sousuke joins that squad in the fictitious middle eastern country to hunt Gauron, which is a shame since i think it does a better job of setting up Sousuke's mindset in the last act of season 1 than without it. Also my favorite arc of season 1.

So I'm assuming this will be more of a re-cut of the first series to fit the novels used for Season 1 Fighting Boy Meets Girl, One Night Stand and Into the Blue? Could that also lead into TSR getting the same treatment?

If this is just a recut instead of a totally reanimated film series, I'm not really looking forward to it. The first season was paced weird and had very standard animation. If Kyoto Animation redid it, it would be amazing.

I like season 1 warts and all, I even like the animation. I suppose as long as they don't include new footage with CG mechs, which is inherently bad, I will give it a watch.

Would've preferred an OVA for Dancing Very Merry Christmas. Who knows? We might still get it.

The first anime series was done by Gonzo from 15 years ago, The new one is going to be done by Xebec. So unless they completely reanimate it, any new footage will stick out like a sore thumb.

They will have to change something to show it theatrically. The first season uses a 4:3 aspect ratio.

On the other hand - it's my favourite. Perfect balance between comedy and action. TSR was way too short.
KyoAni can't do mecha. They should stick to what they do best: moe. Leave mecha to XEBEC/SUNRISE/GAINAX/GONZO/Production IG. |

If the 4th season had not been shifted from this October to next spring, then this would be convenient time for such an announcement. However, since they have delayed it for those few months, I don't think the producers are doing themselves any favor with such an announcement.

Not sure if this has more info than the doramaga article or not, but here's the official site's post on the topic:

Ran it through a translator on my phone. As far as I can tell, they're planning to crop footage from the 2002 anime to 16:9 (so kind of the opposite of what they used to do for home video releases of theatrical movies ). They're also planning to use some new technology to upscale it. Personally I really like the first season and think Gonzo doesn't get enough credit for the things they got right (I think Gonzo's choices in music, casting, and designs provided a solid foundation for later efforts) but I'm not so sure about this project. BTW was the original TV series actually 4:3? I thought it was already some form of widescreen even if it wasn't proportionally quite as "wide" as modern widescreen.
Don't get your hopes up on KyoAni ever doing anything FMP again (unless maybe they do another season of Fumoffu type material). I seem to remember reading that TSR made KyoAni decide that they never wanted to do another mecha show because it was so much work. [/i] |
