There's still no mention of English subtitles on the official site the way that the 2199 discs had. That's the question on everyone's mind, even though the use of "Star Blazers" in the logo implies at least some plans for an international release.

I need Engrish! They did bring the last series over but that was a year or more out. I would like to see what Amazon is doing, they may have English sub titles.

The last series was great, hope this keeps the quality going. I would love to see more classic anime redone like this.

At this point in time in 2199's release timeline, they still hadn't announced them. They didn't announce English subs until March 14, 2012, less than a month before Chapter One's release on April 7 that year.

That said, with the "planned" international release, they may be holding back. Only time will tell.

Keep in mind so far it is only Amazon Video Japan, and I'm not sure why they'd have English subs there while not having them on the Blu-Ray. I'm still holding onto hope that when I (hopefully) get my copy of the limited theatre edition of the Blu-Ray five weeks from now, that it has English subs and my friends and I can go back to our lodgings and watch it with the subs.

Bring it over where? You mean the US? As in COMPLETE series release?

That NEVER happened!

The licensor (Voyager) for the series HAD planned six volumes on Blu ray AND DVD (separate releases, NOT bundled Blu ray/DVD) to finish out the series BUT they didn't sell well enough to finish it.

They were available in limited numbers -- 2000 copies each(?)... Not sure of exact number but it was still above1500 I think... And they STILL didn't sell that well. Not timely, not fast enough...

They cancelled volumes five and six.

They NEVER made an official announcement on their website BUT after over a year since the last volume's release, I think the writing is clearly on the wall.

Maybe Yamato just ISN'T popular enough outside of Japan to do that well, OR maybe Voyager is NOT the right company to market it AND whoever owns the license in Japan should seriously get a more competent company to market the classic AND reimagined series in the States.

It WOULD be nice if they could release the ORIGINAL series uncut AND remastered on Blu ray like they did in Japan but I doubt that will happen... If they can't sell StarBlazers on DVD now I don't see how Yamato will do better unless they seriously market what's available better. I know even the SB fans have complaints about the video and audio quality on the StarBlazers DVDs.

(Hint: No matter how well they redo it, Season 3/Bolar Wars is STILL not worth buying... Even the Japanese don't like the uncut version!!!! Seasons 1 and 2 are the "classic" Yamato. Anything beyond that you have to watch the 1980s theatrical movies. They're official canon -- after that, it's a toss-up. There are so many unfinished Yamato projects and roadkills that it's not funny. The Yamato 2199 remake was the first Yamato project finished in roughly 30 years that captured the public's attention AND held it. Even the last Yamato project with the surviving original voice cast members didn't manage to do that! Also -- Dai-Yama-what? New Yama-what? Yama-2520? Get my point?)

There were rumors Funimation was in the running to the get new animated Yamato but that wasn't the case... They licensed the live-action film and released it about 5 years after the theatrical debut in Japan. (Still worth the $15 I paid for it but NOT worth $25 or $30 other stores were charging for the same disc.)
As much as people like to hate on Funimation in particular, I would have preferred for them, Sentai, or Viz to have done a Yamato 2199 North American release but it didn't happen.

I suspect we WON'T get lucky for the follow-up anime remake, either...
I think we're stuck with Voyager unless somebody gets smart and begins to put two-and-two together for the (lack of) success of Yamato/StarBlazers in the US...

Producer Hirotaka Furukawa, in an interview conducted for Yamato Crew's Ship's Log magazine with both him and Executive Producer Shoji Nishizaki, Furukawa had this to say:

Quote:
As for the overseas development of Star Blazers 2199, we’ll syndicate it in Italy, Germany, France, and America. We’re talking with a distributor and we want to deploy Star Blazers 2202 along with 2199. If all goes well, we’ll make an effort to deliver a new work of Yamato to international fans with very early timing.

So far, they've made good on their promise to distribute to Italy - Two thirteen-episode collections were released on DVD and Blu-Ray in October and December 2016, respectively through Italian anime distributor Dynit.

What's odd though is that the first half was dub-only on both DVD and Blu-Ray, but the second half was released with dual audio and Italian subtitles on both formats. Their store only lists the first part available on DVD (maybe the Blu-Ray sold out), but you have to wonder if there are plans to go back and re-release the discs dual-audio (hopefully with the appropriate exchangeability for those who bought the dub-only release)

So far, it's at least a step in the right direction that they handed the release over to another distributor for this release - hopefully it means that they'll do likewise in the other target markets.
