Irregular at magic high school Anime Film Earns 163 Million Yen in Opening Weekend

The irregular at magic high school The Movie: The Girl Who Summons the Stars (Gekijōban Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Hoshi o Yobu Shōjo) anime film debuted at #5 at the Japanese box office during its opening weekend on Saturday and Sunday, earning about 163 million yen (about US$1.47 million) and selling approximately 107,000 tickets. The film screened in 59 theaters over the weekend.

Many months have passed and the spring season is almost upon them. The “irregular” elder brother Tatsuya and his smart younger sister Miyuki realize that their first year at Magic High School is about to come to a close. The siblings and their friends decide to spend spring break at a private villa on Ogasawara Island. Tatsuya and the others make the most of their brief vacation until a young girl named Kokoa appears before them. The mysterious young girl who escaped from a naval base tells Tatsuya her one wish...
Aniplex of America will host the U.S. premiere of the film at Anime Expo, which takes place July 1-4. The company will then host a wider screening of the film in the U.S. starting on July 28.
Risako Yoshida, who served as a unit director and a storyboarder on the television anime series, directed the film at studio 8-Bit. Original light novel series artist Kana Ishida returned to serve as the character designer and chief animation director. Original light novel author Tsutomu Satou wrote an original new story for the film, and he and WriteWorks wrote the script. Taku Iwasaki composed the music.
The Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter (Meitantei Conan Kara Kurenai no Love Letter) anime film fell from #8 to #10 in its 10th weekend. The film had earned more than 6.5 billion yen (about US$59 million) as of June 4, setting a new record for the Detective Conan film series. The film is the fifth film in a row to set a new franchise record. The film has sold over 5 million tickets since opening in Japan on April 15.
The live-action Peach Girl film fell off the top 10 box office charts in its fifth weekend, and the King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO anime film fell off the chart in its second weekend. The film debuted at #7 in its opening weekend last weekend.
