Nope. They're available in Japanese & there's a Chinese version in Taiwan and that's it. I believe some fans are working on translating them into English, but who knows if they'll actually finish them (translating a novel is much harder and more time consuming than translating a manga).

Now I just need to find a copy of the Chinese novels. Hm...looks like it's time to take a trip to Taichung or Fengyuan. Very Happy

It was told to me that in the preview for the next episode, the number that Haruhi says is the chronological order of the episode, and what Kyon says is the title. Therefore, at the end of episode 3, in the preview, she said the next episode (the actual episode 4) was episode 7 (meaning three have been skipped). Then, in the preview at the end of episode 4, she said the next episode was episode 3, meaning that we are now returning to pick up where the actual episode three left off.

I don't know if that's accurate, it's just what someone told me, but it seems to make sense. 0_0

This is quite interesting, I've also noticed that she said episode 7 at the end of episode 3, but didn't really think about what exactly that meant. If you are right, which I think you are, another mystery is solved Very Happy

...Wow. Judging from the preview of Episode 4 from Episode 3, I expected this to be a kind of slice-of-life anime with some strange magical twist, but I was dead wrong. Seems like they skipped through some of the more "dark" stuff spoiler[With Kyon commenting that he wouldn't want to return to "that" world]. I have a feeling that they're ordering the episodes from "least strange" to "most strange" though (with the exception of Episode 1). Seems like the spoiler["that" world] thing might actually stretch out quite long, and judging from the preview of Episode "3", its going to happen somewhere between the span of 4 and 5.

I have a feeling that the first episode is really Episode "14" (the last episode) chronologically. Judging from the strangeness of the series so far, i can guess that it holds some greater meaning than just a spoiler[parody of cliche mahou shoujo anime], but I could be wrong and it might have just been tossed in there for the laughs. Good thing Haruhi seemed to like it or else spoiler[the whole world would be in danger!]

Also feels like Kyon is being sort of left out from the rest of the SOS Brigade. From his tone of speaking, it seems like Koizumi Itsuki spoiler[possesses some strange power and knows a lot about this stuff], Mikuru is some kind of spoiler[time traveller? (as suggested by others)], and then Yuki told Kyon in Episode 3 (the real one) that she and Haruhi were spoiler[aliens]. That leaves Kyon the only "normal" person, unless I'm missing something or he has yet another strange power not introduced to us yet. It's still a mystery how much Kyon really knows about all this, since they spoiler[skipped through 3 whole episodes].

Wow. Kyon's "whatever" attitude, Haruhi's eccentricity, Mikuru's moeness, the spoiler[shuffling of the episodes], the hilarious bad movie first episode, and most of all, the complete randomness and unpredictability of the series make this series a truly worthy watch. Deserving of a "cult" following it indeed.

I was just waiting to pour this all out the very second I finished the episode Smile

Well, it seems to have pretty good sized cult in Japan and in the anime fandom.

I loved the part in this episode where Haruhi spoiler[strokes Mikuru's hair and nibbles her ear].

I've watched the first four episodes, and truth be told, it's hard to say how I feel about it yet. Since all of the details are yet to be revealed, it's impossible to draw firm conclusions. However, if it continues on the path that:

spoiler[-Haruhi is indeed an alien (or something) who has to be kept placated or Terrible Things will occur.

-Yuki is a sort of guardian, making sure that those Things don't in fact occur.

-Miruku is another something]

then the series could rapidly degenerate in my eyes.

I've been thinking that for some time now, too. But, for me, it only makes following this series that much more interesting; will it end like it began, with dazzling brilliance, or will it buckle underneath it's own sheer absurdity? Either way, it keeps me excited about next week.

I've been wondering about the oddness of the weekly previews, but in a way it makes sense.

Ep4 (or 7 whatever it really is) was hilarious.

What does the "ISM" in "HARUHI ISM" at the end of the opening sequence stand for exactly?

Remember that in the 'movie' which was the episode 1 (possibly 14) they were getting the shots all screwed up and out of sequence as well. This I think, was the foreshadowing for the entire series. I would have said that the errors they made about annoucing which was the 'next episode' would point to what the correct sequence number in the series but, I just realized that at the end of episode 2 leading into 3...the mistake was stated as Episode 2 was coming up.

I am at a loss Razz

I assume that the "ISM" means a way of thinking, or being. Much like the "ISM" in communism, buddhism, judism, socialism, etc... the "ISM" in "haruhi ism" probably just means that this is the way of haruhi. Usually, when there are fans or followers, it becomes "ISM". Otherwise, it's just something meaningless.

Yes, it's "-ism", as in "Haruhiism".

You just have no idea how insanely popular this series of novels is in Japan.... and the anime just feeds (and feeds off) that.

Yeah, I thought that's what it might have been, it's just that the "ISM" is in a separate line, so it looks like an acronym.

I agree on both counts. The sample is too small to draw any useful conclusions from, and rating a series that has barely gotten started yet is pointless.

As for people who claim to have seen the entire series, when it hasn't even finished airing yet... I believe that this is tantamount to spamming, and should be grounds for banning. I've remarked as much to the senior staff, on occasion.

At the time I'm posting this, the series is already at number five on the top 10 best anime (bayesian) in the encyclopedia, with 120 votes. Shocked It's only four episode in; how can one rightly rate this series as masterpiece after only four episodes?!
In any case, Haruhi Suzumiya seems primed to have quite the worldwide cult following

And that's going to keep on growing once that series gets licensed in the States (hopefully the R1 companies can take advantage of that)! Surprised

Seriously, has there ever been a series that got absolutely no buzz in the beginning and then popularity sky rocketed in only a few episodes?

i think the reason it can be rated so popular so early on in it's life, is because (as far as i can tell) it follows a very strange storyline. Actually, an example would illustrate this better: the series i can most relate this show to would be azumanga diaoh. It follows a (though convulted) storyline, occasionally branching off, and in the end it winds up having no serious meaning, besides being fun and light.

so, what im trying to say is, it's one of those shows, that basically, the first few episodes show whats to come for the whole thing.

either way, i absolutley love everything about this show, and seeing that it is so popular makes me happy. Most amazing shows dont seem to get this much attention, so im really really glad to see this one getting the true attention that it deserves. Very Happy Very Happy

oh, and i believe someone mentioned a few times there were novels in japan...will they ever be overseas? and by novels, do we mean books or mangas? either way, i will buy it Very Happy

Yes, I mean novels. There's also a manga (just started) and a defunct earlier manga (commonly agreed to be so bad as to be considered outside the canon, and never likely to be revived), but the entire phenomenon revolves around seven (soon eight) novels by Tanigawa Nagaru. The anime is just a recent (albeit glorious) offshoot of the phenomenon.

They're already "overseas", in the sense that Chinese-language translations have been published. But I feel sure that it will take a while before you see an official English translation.

As for unofficial... that's another matter. But not one for this forum.

Currently reading Volume 3, Suzumiya Haruhi no Taikutsu, part of which featured as ep. 4 of the anime.
