I guess we all need help from time to time... hah...
Here's the facts (based off of Dormcat's message): 1) Approximate time and place you watched this title. If it was on TV, airing hour is appreciated. **It is roughly more then 6 years old. 2) Video format. Was it on TV, in a movie theater, or on a video? If it's video-based, was it VHS or DVD? **VHS, and it is a movie, not a series 3) Audio and/or subtitle language(s). **Japanese w/ English subs 4) A brief description of the story, including its genre and background settings. **It is an alternate timeline sort of movie that takes place around the 1950s or '60s. It is about Japan flying a shuttle into space (I believe that they are like the first ones to do so, in the world). It follows the pilots' stories as they train up to pilot this shuttle and go into space. 5) Data on protagonist(s). Name, age, gender, race, most and least favorite(s), equipments, etc. **The pilots are all male, adult and Japanese. I don't remember much about them other then the fact that they are in space suits a lot of the time, and there is one man who has a relationship with a woman who I believe wears a kimono. 6) Anything else distinctive and special enough that you've never seen in other anime titles, like mascots, special abilities, special equipments, martial art styles, etc. **Other then all the aformentioned stuff, I really have nothing else to go on. I know the cover of the VHS has something like a man in a space suit with the Earth kind of overlaping his helmet and space above that (I think). Please help! I had this flashback just a few moments ago reminding me of the movie, and it's going to kill me until I know what it is called! Thanks a million! Khrim |

ok. why are some animes based on different mangas? Why are some of those manga based animes not go over the complete manga like angel sanctuary and others like that Why dont they finish the manga instead of just doing a little movie and thinking that will satisfy everyone by leaving them on a cliffhanger...
When are some different animes going to be played? |

Manga and anime are completely different industries. Not every single manga is guaranteed to be created in anime and not all anime are based on manga. The anime is never meant to be a kind of substitute for the manga so you can't expect anime that is based on a manga to be always completed according to the manga. Angel Sanctuary was actually just the first volume of the manga and it's meant to be more of a promotional/teaser anime than a "cliffhanger" that they never finished.
I don't know what you mean by "anime based on different manga" or "when are some different anime going to be played". For the latter, if you mean on TV or something, you'll just have to wait. |

That's not a misspelling, that's an alternate system of transliteration. Most of us in the West are used to older systems like Hepburn (ヘボン式) and Revised Hepburn (修正ヘボン式), where the transliteration into romaji actually matches the sound of the syllables. However, for some reason I've never been able to understand, two closely-related systems of transliteration, nihon-shiki (日本式) and its modern derivative kunrei-shiki (訓令式), are considered more "genuine" -- and, in fact, kunrei-shiki is the "official" system of transliteration taught in ISO-certified schools in Japan. In these systems, a number of the syllables that Hepburn correctly transliterates by sound are modified into something that just doesn't match the sound of the syllable. One of these is shi which is now si. Therefore, tensi is "correct". All of which is complete stuff and nonsense to anyone with half an ear. - abunai |

Thanks for clearing that up abunai. I do agree that it really doesn't make sense to transliterate a word into something that doesn't sound like it. One example of this being the difference in the Japanese Nadesico and the English Nadesico, the former being pronounced Nadeshiko giving it a kind of play on words feel (reminded me of Yamato Nadeshiko when I heard it) and latter pronounced as it's spelled.

Hmm. Well, that is, in fact, precisely the inference you're supposed to to draw from it. Nadesico is a slightly modified kunrei-shiki way of writing 撫子, the same word which Hepburn transliterates as nadeshiko. 撫子 is a flower, Dianthus superbus, in English called a pink. In Japanese allegorical language, 大和撫子 (yamato nadeshiko, where yamato means "ancient Japan") is a phrase used to describe the perfect flower of Japanese femininity, a woman who embodies all the traits that are seen as refined and desirable in traditional Japanese womanhood. - abunai |

Did the "pinky promise" ritual that kids do when they're serious about keeping a promise originate in Japan? I've noticed is a lot in anime, and cultural notes for a fansub said it did. (I'm not so trusting of that, though, since the fansub that came from pluralized words with an apostrophe+s.)

Why do people in anime always make "happy" noises when they eat something tasty? Listening to characters mummble "Num num num num" under their breath completely ruins serious moments for me.

I don't think there's any reason for that, they just put whatever they feel like as the default.
Because Japanese are adept at being cute... and so they can make an onomatopoeia out of it like they do with everything. |

That question is about this food. I saw it several times in Animes, mostly in bentos. So my question: Does it really exist (i guess yes), and if so, whats its name, how does it taste and where does it grow? Is it popular (in Japan)? thanks Edit: My second question i forgot. 
The Anime Characters mostly have those light rings/shapes around their head/ hair. Is it sth. similar like those big eyes on the characters? What are the animators try to show us with those light shapes? The lightreflection??? in room / outside? thanks again for help - Nader |

They're just highlights from the sun/light on the character's head. Not much else to it. I think this might have already been adressed in the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni thread, but I'm only three episodes in and that thread is so loaded down with spoilers I don't think I'll be able to stop myself from reading them. I like this series to much to want to spoil it for myself. Why is the Na part always written in red? If the reason behind this is directly explained in the series, just tell me that this is also a spoiler since I'd like to see for myself. |

As far as I know, Its red out of respect for the game that its based off of. I believe it was lightly addressed somewhere in the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya thread, pretty early into it... If it's not there, than I guess it's in the Higurashi thread.... It would be pretty early into the thread, because I only followed that thread up until about ep. 4.
