New Anime Invade the Box Office

...but Narnia keeps Doraemon, One Piece and Gundam from the top spot.

The Chronicles of Narnia, One Piece movie 7, Doraemon the Movie 2006 and the third Zeta Gundam movie all premiered in Japan this past weekend.

Narnia, which has earned over US$650 million worldwide since its debut in December has added another #1 box office opening to its roster, earning just over a billion yen (US$9 million) in its opening weekend.

Earning 433 million yen, the latest Doraemon movie didn't come anywhere near competing with Narnia for the top box office spot. Doraemon: Nobita no Kyoryu [2006] is a modern remake of Nobita's Dinosaur, the first ever Doraemon movie, released theatrically in March 1980.

The seventh One Piece Movie, One Piece: Karakuri Castle's Mecha Giant Soldier, premiered in fourth position, earning 135 million yen, right behind The Star Of Prefectural Government (Kaikaku), a Japanese live-action movie that premiered last week (Kaikaku earned 287 million yen).

The third and last Zeta Gundam movie, Love is the Pulse of the Stars, premiered in fifth position, earning 122 million yen. This is significantly less than the 160 million yen earned by the first movie, Heir to the Stars, during its opening weekend, but more than the 117 million yen earned by the second move, Lovers.
