Taken out of Context
Many readers have written in expressing concerns that the Animage Top 100 list was extremely skewd. Most of these readers could not fathom why certain Anime were on the list, when certain others were not.
One reader, however wrote in to inform us that someone had explained the list on the Planetnamek discussion forum.
Excerpts from the post:
I have the issue of Animage that this list appears in. I'm looking at it right now as a matter of fact. They are taking the list *WAAAAAAAY* out of context. The ranking on the list isn't an order of 1-100 per se. The titles are grouped into different categories.
The different Categories are then listed and explained:
Group 1: #1-#15 "The Blooming of Full length manga based movies to TV anime"
Group 2: #16-#29 "The Arrival of the Anime Boom"
Group 3: #30-#42 "The Rise of the Anime Fan Generation"
Group 4: #43-#47: "The World of Studio Ghibli"
Group 5: #48-#55: "The Prosperity of Comics"
Group 6: #56-#70: "The Signs of Japanimation" (this covers many titles that went to America)
Group 7: #71-#90: "The Permeatation and Diffusion of Anime"
Group 8: #91-#100: "The Readers' Picks for the Anime that should be remembered in the 21st Century"
Group 8 actually had 30 picks in it, 20 of which had already been included in other groups. This list is what should be read as the readers choice of Anime that should be most remembered.
1. Card Captor Sakura
2. Gensō Maden Saiyuki
3. Shinseiki Evangelion
4. Hunter X Hunter
5. ONE PIECE

It is also worth noting, that "Anime that should be remembered" does not mean best Anime, nor does it mean favorite Anime. Although typically a ballot like this results in readers voting for their favorite series.
As mentionned in our previous post on this subject, ANN will be posting the entire list shortly.
