Studio Ghibli to Split from Tokuma
posted on by Christopher Macdonald
The Daily Yomiuri reports that Studio Ghibli is to separate from Tokuma Shoten by the end of March. Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata will be board members of the newly independent corporation. Ghibli was originally founded in 1985 as a subsidiary of Tokuma Shoten, but was absorbed into Tokuma Shoten in 1997 in order to subsidize the ailing publisher. Tokuma has since restructured and no longer needs to rely on the profits generated by Ghibli.
