No Anime In Japanese Top 10

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
First time in Two months that no anime ranks in the top 10

While Ghost in the Shell: Innocence is dominating DVD sales, this past weekend was the first weekend since June 13th that an anime wasn't in the top ten. But even then, and now, movies based on anime or manga do remain in the top ten. This past weekend it was Ninja Hattori Kun The Movie and Kamen Rider Blade: Missing Ace, back in June it was Umizaru. However, the week before, June 8th, there were no anime, or adaptations of anime or manga in the top 10.

While anime is popular in Japanese theaters and compares respectably to Japanese live-action, it doesn't come anywhere near the success of American blockbuster movies. This years top anime were Pocket Monster Advance Generation: 2004 ($34m in box office sales), Doraemon 2004 ($23m), Conan ($22m), Crayon Shin-chan 2004 ($11m), Naruto movie ($11m), Innocence ($8m), Steamboy ($8m) and Inu Yasha - Crimson Horai Island ($7m), while the top American films are Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($121m), The Last Samurai ($119m (more than it made in North America)), Finding Nemo ($102m), Lord of the Rings ($90m), The Matrix Revolutions ($61m), Spider-Man 2 ($57m), The day after tomorrow ($45m), and Troy ($38m). Most Japanese movies don't manage to break $10 million, however Crying Out for Love, In the Center of the World managed to shatter that barrier, earning over $73 million to date. Other successful Japanese movies this year include Quill ($18m) Hanochi ($15m) and One Missed Call ($13m).

Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle will be released in Japan on November 20th. His last two movies, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke earned over $200 million and $150 million respectively at the Japanese Box office.

This week the Naruto movie falls out of the top 10 (after 4 weeks), as does Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (after 12 weeks).
