PS2 Problems Playing Escaflowne DVDs

ANN Confirms problems, Bandai Responds.
Anime News Network has been able to independantly confirm that some PS2s have major problems playing Escaflowne DVDs volume 5 and 6.
The DVDs do not play at all on Play Station 2 devices with DVD Driver Version 1.10, giving "UNABLE TO READ DISC" when you try to run either one, even with the "Diagnosis" feature enabled on the machine. Other versions may also display similar problems.
According to Bandai rep Jerry Chu this is a problem with the PS2, not the DVDs themselves. This information sounds very plausible because many people have been complaining that the PS2 is a much less robust DVD player than it was originally thought to be.
Worth noting that these are the first two DVDs in the series that are made by Bandai's new DVD replicator, Future Media. Previous DVDs in the series, replicated by Cinram, did not exhibit any serious problems on the PS2 (Viewing the entire series on PS2 we experienced a short display of pixelation on the first DVD that was not present on our other DVD player)
