New Evangelion Release Details

posted on by Jonathan Mays
June 25th box set to include entire TV series, four director's cut episodes, final movie cut, and bonus disc with never-before seen "live-action" version of the film.

Gainax's upcoming re-release of Neon Genesis Evangelion will combine the classic series with several features never-before released in Japan or elsewhere. In addition to new component digital master "by re-doing the telecine from scratch" and both 2.0 and 5.1 audio tracks (both previously announced), the new box set will include several unreleased "visual clips."

All 26 original episodes will be present, as well as the four "remake" episodes as seen on the Japanese LaserDisc release. The final cut of the Evangelion movie--Death(True)2, Air, and Magokoro wo Kimi ni--will also be included. Gainax's newly announced "bonus disc" will contain creditless opening and closing video, the original teaser trailer, and a never-before released live-action edition of the film. All discs will fit in a limited edition art box.

The price of the "Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD-Box" is 39,800 yen ($322.53). Although the box is not expected to be released until June 25th, Gainax has placed a reservation deadline of April 14th. After the box set is released, individual volumes of the re-release will become available but without the art box. It is unclear whether the "bonus disc" will also be sold separately.

In antipication of the new box set, Gainax is also releasing "Neon Genesis Evangelion 01 Test-Type," an early version of the re-release with improved video and audio. The DVD, which contains the first episode of the series, will also include a new "full-size" version of the "Zankoku na Tenshi no Teze" opening theme. Released with a new cover illustration by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the DVD may be purcased for 1,500 yen ($12.63). Gainax is planning a March 26th release date, with a reservation deadline of today, February 17th.
