Spirited Away not Qualified for Academy Award?
posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Spirited Away to be broadcast on Japanese TV in January, fears that it may be ineligible for Oscar.
According to this article (Japanese) in the Daily Yomiuri, Spirited Away will be broadcast on Japanese Television on January 24th, 2003.
Fan's recalling the 1997 disqualification of Suo's "Shall we dance?" have raised fears that Spirited Away may too be disqualified. Shall We Dance? was disqualified because it had been shown on Japanese TV the year before.
According to the Oscar qualification rules, a film is not eligible for an Oscar if it is shown in any form other than theatrically within six months of its initial theatrical release.
Spirited Away premiered in Japan on June 20th, 2001. Given that the Japanese TV broadcast is well over 6 months after the initial theatrical release, it seems that Spirited Away's candidacy for the Oscars is safe.
