I remember watching this raw with my buddy in the room who was doing something else and was none-too-impressed at the ukioy-e porn. I really only watched it for the unique artstyle that makes it nearly stand alone in animation.

Wow! Very interesting. I will be checking out the book and the fansub. Is there any relation to The Life of an Amorous Woman, other than the author?

I watched a subtitled release in an anime film class several years ago. Needless to say, it was an interesting discussion. Laughing

Former Central Park Media head-honcho John O'Donnell was a big fan of the film, but when he tried to license it a few years later he was rebuffed: the two producers had had a falling out, and both refused to do anything that would enrich the other in any way

Damn. I wonder how many titles ended up missing out on localization because of petty behind the scenes drama like this...

Just reminds me of Samurai Champloo's words of wisdom: "Japan during this period was a land of man-love second only to Ancient Greece". Clearly that Dutchman just hadn't found the right parts of Japan.

And, of course, the ukiyo-e artist episode of Champloo.

In general I feel like geisha aren't a very common subject in anime. Can anyone think of another geisha anime?

Tayu aren't geishas though, each one belongs to different jobs with different hierarchies. While the Tayu where the most acomplished and expensive of the prostitution field and could rival the most talented geisha at times they were not the same.

This anime looks really interesting at least visually, I will search for a fansub as I don't have a PAL VHS...

Heya Justin, great article as usual! I remember seeing this on your anime list years ago. The one-sentence summary in the ANN Encyclopedia is pretty audacious: "A story of a man's erotic experiences since the age of seven." Thankfully your review did more to put the premise into context for me.

Also, to second what another user posted:

How do I tune to You Tube to watch this anime. To bad it hasn't made on to DVD I hope that those issues can be cleared up soon. Only problem with the demise of Blockbuster it would be hard to rent to view with Red Box you need a credit card to do that. Sad
