This has been the best show to come out in a long time, and I really hope the manga author follows through and finishes the story out to a satisfying conclusion (rather than fizzling out or adding filler, etc.) This story also deserves to be animated through the end since the music, voice acting, and pacing of the anime version took the already amazing manga story and somehow made it even better. This has the makings of becoming a classic, must-see anime - it may become so even as is, but I'm really crossing my fingers for more.
I also hope it gets the royal treatment from Sentai with a dub and a fantastic limited/premium edition blu-ray release filled with extra goodies |

I would say this series is definitely the breakout hit anime of 2017. Maybe Not in terms of popularity but definitely in terms of reception. This series has received some of the highest critical acclaim, plus it has been getting a lot of momentum since than and i do not fault it.
It really is a unique series with an interesting story and has a distinct signature feel to it. This is something that is not easily obtainable these days, especially in such a over-saturated industry. The studio behind it, Kinema Citrus, Which until now has had a somewhat iffy record in adapting content in anime have done an excellent job in adapting it. I give my applause to the animation crew for making the world of Made in Abyss looking so real and alive, the art style really captures the moment like you are seeing this wonderful world in all it's glory. Like many others have said, the only real downside to this, is that it is left unfinished. However that is to say the adaptation was not good. They did a solid job in adapting it and as far were it could have been chosen to end it, they left in a pretty solid end zone, easy to pick up from where it was left by reading the manga. I just hope than when enough content is out, they can continue to animate it and with the same team again as they did a good job with it. |

Ultimately how good this is, all depends on whether or not it gets a second season. I saw that the soundtrack sold well on Amazon JP. I do no know about the braodcast ratings, and we will never know the exact home release sales.

A truly wonderful show and a great review by Nick that captures all the title's strengths. I am currently miffed at Nick for his hapless March Comes in Like a Lion reviews, but work like this reminds me that he is an excellent writer.

I haven't enjoyed an anime as much as Made in Abyss in a long time. While the plot may seem simplistic on paper, the amount of world building combined with how the characters relate and build off each other is fantastic and makes a really detailed world. The abyss itself almost adds a mystery element in regards to the curse and how it affects the humans - and often eventual degradation of humanity - of those around it. Add in the voice acting, music, and animation and just... I'm still in awe. It's also the first time I went and bought an anime OST, the music is just that good.

This was a great series. I hope the manga gets far enough we can get a season 2 sometime in the near future.

My biggest problem with Made in Abyss is that its relative popuarity has introduced a whole new generation of anime fans to this character design style. I don't look forward to years and years of teenagers claiming that Etrian Odyssey and Girls' Last Tour are copying Made in Abyss...

Definitely a great show, but I found the middle portion very weak, with slow pacing (I don't understand why they stretched out the middle so much just to turn around and make a double length final episode, just condense the 4 mid episode into 3-2). Rico is also essentially an escort NPC (she's to Reg what Ashley was to Leon in RE4), so it get aggravating how unsuited she is to the trip and completely reliant on Reg.

There is no question Rico could never have made it as far as she did without Reg. However, the show also made clear that Rico had a lot a knowledge about the Abyss's flora and fauna and other aspects that contributed to the partnership. |

To be fair, any human other than a fully powered white whistle would have a 99% chance of a gruesome death in the Abyss without a guardian like Reg. And even some whit whistles don't come back. Reg does keep her alive but it makes sense and would be kinda cheap if she was somehow able to overpower the dangers of the abyss on grit and human spirit, which is what a lesser show might do.

What else is there to say about this show that hasn’t been said already? Simply a fantastic show and a great review by Mr. Creamer. One of the best of the year and I hope season 2 can happen for it soon.
@ meiam - I think that it’s shown well at that part that both Rico and Reg would have needed each other to make it as far as they did and that was partly why it was paced the way it was. The middle helps to establish their good partnership and when Ep 10 happens, it hurts more than it would have initially. The pacing did not make the middle portion weak at all and the staff did a very good job of keeping us invested in their journey through the end of the anime thus far. |

Agreed. Although I share your wish for an eventual season 2, the manga doesn't have enough chapters to warrant enough material for it unfortunately. The anime adaptation leaves off at Chapter 26 and the manga is 16 chapters ahead (at this time of writing). Not to mention that the series' mangaka is very slow with drawing new chapters for it. Who knows when we'll get another season? I just hope it's not too long like 5 years or something lol. |

A lot of people I've talked to feel the same as me, that this show is possibly the best show of the last few years, and, with a proper conclusion, would be an all time favorite. As it is, it's still truly something special, and worthy of every word of praise, but we certainly do need a sequel. I'm okay with waiting a little while for the manga to wrap up, and for another glorious production like this, but I hope it happens at some point. It would be a serious tragedy to see this show disappear into the abyss... he he (that one just wrote itself, to be honest)
I made this Sakuga MAD/Anime Music Video for the show pretty much as soon as it wrapped up because I was so taken by every aspect of this show's production. I'm not really trying to self-promote, but feel free to give it a watch. |

I'm gonna be very disappointed if this series doesn't get an action RPG video game adaptation at some point, the premise and the world it created being so rich and deep. But yes, very good show that does some very brutal things to it's young characters, so be prepared going in.
