Frozen Tops Ponyo at Japanese Box Office
posted on by Egan Loo
Disney's American animated film Frozen has sold 12.65 million tickets for 15.9 billion yen (about US$156 million) as of Tuesday. That makes it the #1 stereoscopic 3D film at the Japanese box office, topping 2009's Avatar (15.6 billion yen). It is also now the #8 all-time top-grossing film at Japanese box office, having surpassed Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli's anime film Ponyo (2008, 15.5 billion yen) and Avatar. It is also by far Walt Disney Studios Japan's top-grossing film in Japan, higher than 1998's Armageddon (13.5 billion yen).
Frozen won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film over Miyazaki and Ghibli's The Wind Rises this year. Here is Frozen's pivotal (and Oscar-winning) song "Let It Go," as sung by Takako Matsu as Elsa in the Japanese dub:
