I think that rather than a prequel, Tail of the Moon is a sequel to this volume. (Meaning this was written first.) My impression was that Ueda felt she screwed over Hanzo and owed him a happy ending.
(That also might explain some of what Casey mentioned.) Overall I like this volume better than the long series, largely because the heroine is more a stand-on-her-own-feet kind of girl. But I like Home better than both of them.
