Please don't use anime phrases as a way to communicate in Japanese, hahaha so weeb. And they lack cohesiveness as in 'coolio' lol

There are a few sentences which make anime and videogame references in the Duolingo course already — some I remember include ‘Is this a pigeon?’, ‘That 8-year-old is a professor’ (references Nichijou), and ‘We have taken over all of your bases’ (which has also been translated as….)
EDIT: I see the effect of the update has been to jump me back quite a long way through the course trail. Which isn’t entirely a bad thing, backtracking for revision has become more difficult with Duolingo’s recent redesign, but doesn’t seem completely intentional. |

I learned Japanese from anime and am now a producer of entertainment media (and have worked in the anime, game industry for over ten years) in Japan. With the lack of resources during my time as a student, I think it’s great to have language-content learning based on something people are passionate about, to serve as a gateway for future learning. I get while you feel this way, but poo-poo-oing a new form of learning for others isn’t the way. |
